The Northern Territory Supreme Court is hosting a conference on “Language and the Law” in the Supreme Court in Alice Springs from - 5th - 7th April, 2019. The conference is run in close co-operation with the Aboriginal Interpreter Service and the Interpreting and Translating Service NT.

This will be the third “Language and the Law” conference hosted by the Court. The objects of the conference are:

• to improve understanding by the various participants in the court process of the practical and other concerns of interpreters (with a special focus on Aboriginal interpreters);

• to improve how court officers engage and work effectively with interpreters in court;

• to develop greater cultural sensitivity in those involved; and 

The conference is suitable for judicial officers, legal practitioners, police officers, corrections staff, interpreters, academics and students. 

Speakers will include Justice Stephen Gageler of the High Court, Supreme and Federal Court judges, Professor Diana Eades from the University of New England, Professor Sandra Hale from the University of New South Wales and a number of other academics, legal practitioners and court interpreters.
